Assistant City Planner

The City of Cohoes is seeking candidates to fill an opening in City’s Planning Department as an Assistant City Planner. This position is an entry-level professional planning job under the supervision of the City Planner. The Assistant City Planner performs administrative and professional work relating to planning, zoning, and other community development projects. Work assignments may increase in level of complexity and responsibility as professional competency increases.

o    Salary: $45,000

o    Monday-Friday – 8:00am-4:00pm - 40 hour work week

Typical Work Activities:

o    Assists the City Planner in the development of planning documents, housing research, and community development processes;

o    Coordinates with applicants seeking development projects to prepare paperwork and appropriate responses for the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Historic Preservation and Architectural Review Board;

o    Aides in the preparation of reports using Adobe Creative Suite or other presentation software, memorandums, PowerPoint presentations, Excel models, and presentation graphics;

o    Produces GIS maps and spatial analysis, including compiling, analyzing, and managing socioeconomic and geospatial data;

o    Creating presentation boards and renderings for community engagement;

o    Reviews range of development proposals for consistency with City codes and ordinances and issues appropriate decisions;

o    Plans and conducts field studies and surveys;

o    Assists with administrative duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

o    Strong interest in community and neighborhood planning, and urban redevelopment;

o    Proficiency in GIS products (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) preferred;

o    Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office products;

o    Experience preparing and assembling presentation graphics, graphic models and renderings, and report/plan documents;

o    Demonstrated ability to apply analytical methods and sound judgement in problem solving;

o    Excellent oral presentation and written communication skills;

o    Excellent organizational skills;

o    Detail oriented and commitment to accuracy;

o    Ability to work in both individual and collaborative environments;

o    Ability to work under minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualification:


Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering or related field 


Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Engineering or related filed, or completion of an equivalent number of credit hours in undergraduate curriculum leading to a degree in Planning or related filed; and two (2) years of experience in City Planning or a related field.
