White Street Gunfire Arrest

Mayor Morse and the Cohoes Police Department announce the expedited arrest of twenty-year-old Diamonte K. Nelson of 102 Delaware Street in Albany for his role in the gunfire that took place on the afternoon May 8, 2019 on White Street in Cohoes. The arrest was made within 24 hours of the incident. Nelson has been charged with the felony of reckless endangerment in the first degree.  He was arraigned in Cohoes City Court and remanded to Albany County Jail on $75,000.00 bail pending further court proceedings.

Mayor Morse said, “The Cohoes Police Department did an excellent job, as always, arresting this individual within 24 hours of the gunfire. We have worked tirelessly to rebuild our community and strengthen our reputation as one of the safest cities in Upstate New York.  This type of senseless act, will not be tolerated.  As Mayor, I will examine every means possible within our Police Department leadership and use every tool available to protect our community. Public safety is paramount.”

Furthermore, Mayor Morse says that in the coming weeks he will be submitting to the City Council, one of the strictest nuisance laws in the country. This will allow the city to deal with landlords who refuse to address the issues of drugs, violence and other crimes that take place on their properties that affect the quality of life for all of our residents and visitors alike. In addition, we have implemented a new code task force to deal with significant code issues and have partnered up with several other police agencies to address drug-related crimes.  Morse states, “Bottom line, if you think you will come into Cohoes and set up shop for the purpose of promoting crime, you better be prepared to go to jail.”

Leads are being followed up on by the Cohoes Police Detective Bureau, and more charges may be pending.  Anyone with information regarding the incidents is asked to call the Cohoes Police Detective Bureau at (518) 233-2146.
